INSTRUCTOR POST - workload/required feedback

The entire course work load
According to majority agreement, here's what you're all responsible for by the end of the course;

1. 5-8 sec single character dialogue shot (already complete
2. two (2) JRG 2012 shots
3. one more JRG shot or one additional 5-8 sec dialogue shot.

This is the first time I've run the 620 class so I'd like you to got to the comments field of this post and write a couple of sentences about what worked well for the course and what you'd like to see changed. Your feedback is required for class participation.

  1. The set up of this class worked well for me, by being able to tailor the class to work best with my final semester schedule where I was working on both the projects and my short film.

  2. Working on shots from a real project was a cool idea. One thing that I was expecting, was more feedback on the Blog. Right at the beginning of the semester I was excited that we had a blog and that we could comment on shots through the week but that did not happen and was kind of a disappointment. I was expecting more participation.

  3. I think that the balance of timing was not quite right as we were given too much time to work on the first JRG shots (10 weeks)but we now only have 2 weeks to work on another shot which is as equally large as the first ones. I know that some of the delay with the first shots was due to the rigs not being fully complete and I think that we could have worked on something else in the meantime.

I do think it was great to work on a collaborative project though and I want to thank you for having us participate in this!

  5. The class was good. Working on project was challenging in many ways. We could work on different rigs apart from Norman , Hulk and Morpheus. But i feel that we could have worked on assignments till the rigs were ready.
But still the project proved very helpful in number of ways like matching up the poses from previous and scene after (which can restrict your acting, that you wanted to do) for the continuation. Also have to keep an eye on other scenes for not repeating the same acting in our scene or for following the position of the characters.

  6. I think it was great what the objective of the class was-working on a collab is great as most of us are directing/animating our own project, its a learning experience to be on the other side. I totally appreciate the production line process.
I do think like the others said though that till the rigs/shots were not ready we could've worked on other assignments as we spent a lot of time on just doing 2 shots.
But over all thanks for collaborating and teaching us the production process! :)

  7. I like this class very much, I think it's so great to have the experience to work in a project. And I think it's great to have this blog here so that we can get instructions after class, and also we can see other people's work and learn from them.
But as others said, we took too long in the 1st shot. Then after several weeks, I feel that the more I worked on it, the worse it became now.
And another thing is, I think for some problems, you don't need to really work in maya for the student, you can just show the main idea and let us do it after class. I think we can have more critics in this way.
But over all it's a great class, thank you very much!

  8. i liked the class a lot. i just wish i had know about the last assignment sooner so that i could have arranged my time better. i also wish that the class size would have been smaller so that everyone's work could have been seen in class every week. other than those two things i have no complaints about the class.

  9. One thing I really liked about this class was that you could upload your works on a blog and exchange feedback outside a class. As long they did not get removed from the blog, you could always watch their works as much as you like.

I also enjoyed participating in JRG collaborative project because I did not get much chance to do a group project other animation classes. As part of a team, I learned the importance of individual skill, time management, and team communication.

It was great honor to take your class, David. I also really appreciate everyone’s feedbacks and great works which helped me to improve my skills.

  10. Hey Dave!!

First off glad that I had you for ALL of my classes this semester and really looking forward to the GDS next semester!

Biggest thing that I would have liked out of the class would have been deadlines for a "complete" project. I know that we were shooting for more of a production timeline, but never really having a deadline kinda blew some of the winds out of my sails. In our one on one you gave me a goal to have finished in a certain time frame and I was charged up to get it done, but without having that deadline there was really no charge.

Also, I think what would have helped out a lot, maybe have more work time during the school year. Instead of everyone sitting around critiquing everyone's shot which should be what the blog is for, but maybe instead, have an hour of critique where some people get to get dailies from the class, but then having more of a work time where you can float and we can work and get more of a hands on help with our work.

Aside from that I really enjoyed having this class! woo wooooo!!

  11. It was a big advantage to me to take this class along with animating on The JRG collaborative. It's difficult to assess this class because of the circumstances with the project we worked on; it was the first time I took an animation class that did that. I'm pretty open minded when it comes to teaching methods, whether it be through critique, demonstrations, or lecture. I would have liked to have a period of time where David goes around the class and does some one on one for a few minutes, but I completely understand that dailies for JRG had to be top priority.
David did a fantastic job managing the class under the chaos of having an outside project and I do feel that my improvement as an animator has accelerated by taking this class.

  12. It is a good class that we could work on a project. That is interesting experience. From this project, I learned it is important to follow the director's idea and then animate the characters. This is not like we doing our own stuff, but it is a chance to know how to work with others in the company.

The other thing is not only shows characters' performance but we have to listen to characters' voices. The intonation of lines is an important point to notice. We have to think about it and perform into the animation. Now I start to observe people's movement when they are talking.

However, One thing I need to point out is the schedule. I felt time was not enough to finish my whole shots. I knew that was due to the JRG stuffs delayed rig and sets. It is not the fault of the class. Like the last shot, I got it one week before final. I didn't have enough time to fix it.

In short, I'm glad to work with David and everybody in this class. Thank you!
