So I'm a little behind but I have my thing rough splined which was a task in itself switching from stepped mode. I've mainly been working on the father character in the beginning...the ending is still rough. Feedback is helpful!
The only thing that really pops into my head is the hug. Depending on how far you want to go you could really push it - like the dad lifting the kid clear off his feet and holding him up high. Maybe like this:
